About the Luthier. Stan Schmidt spent many years of his life in engineering jobs where he was involved in structural engineering projects and in conducting large acoustic and shock physics tests. His skills as a master wood carver, amateur musician and artist eventually led him to follow his calling to become a luthier. Stringed instruments became his passion.
Following his instincts, he spent several years buying every book available and studying all aspects of the art and trade of the luthier on his own. He developed and performed acoustic and structural tests on many violin models that he made before he settled down to making his first violin. Stan received an award on the second violin that he made. He also received an award on the first cello that he made, and a first-place award on his seventh violin. His style is recognized as being artistically meticulous, mature and distinct.
Old vs. New. Things have changed. Many professional musicians have hung up their priceless antiques and bought new well-made professional instruments that they prefer to play in concert due to their strength and clarity. Newly made professional-level instruments are now considered by many to be a wise investment as they are likely to become the “next valued Strads of the future.”
